>> reporter: this morning, the community is mourning the loss of a veteran salor as questions swirl about what happened and what's next for the america's cup race in san francisco. a van crashes into a south bay hospital. the many questions surrounding this accident. an early-morning fire at a popular san francisco restaurant. why firefighters had a tough time putting it out. >> everyone's been accommodated.

it's been a good thing. a show of support for a music festival underway in napa. but not everyone is singing a happy tune. "mornings on 2" starts right now. well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. it's friday, may 10th. topping the news, our continuing coverage of the america's cup training disaster. race organizers plan a news conference at 11:00 this morning. they will discuss race safety after a 72-foot catamaran flipped end over end on the bay. san francisco police will head up the investigation. the accident tossed all 11 crew members of the racing team into the water. 36-year-old andrew simpson of england, known as bart was trapped under the boat for ten minutes. the former olympic gold medalist could not be saved.

7:01. well, the tragedy out in the bay is raising new concerns about the safety of the race. ktvu's claudine wong is at treasure island right now where the ship was towed after it capsized. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. certainly a lot of questions right now about what exactly happened, what this means to the race. we're on treasure island this morning. behind you, this is the catamaran that was involved. you can see the top of the red catamaran. it's kind of upside down on this dry dock. it will stay here as far as we know. while sfpd conducts their investigation. yesterday afternoon, the team took it out for a training run. the conditions were described as not unusual in the bay. the catamaran flip the sending

sending -- flipped sending simpson and others over. simpson was an experienced sailor. he won a gold and silver from britain. here's him from youtube. >> it's fantastic. four wins. >> reporter: simpson had moved his wife and his infant son to the bay area for this race. he was serving as a strategist for the swedish team, certainly his team, which is described as a very close-knit family, is mourning now, and what happens next for them is still unclear. >> the adams team have two boats. this is the first boat. it wasn't the race boat. so, you know, we need to review, as i see it. >> reporter: so at this point, there's a question of, you've got the team and what they are gonna do next. will they continue on?

will they rebuild this catamaran and try to race again? and then you have a lot of talk about this race in san francisco. any time you have something like this, it raises questions about safety, what's next, it raises questions about the race? we know race organizers will be there as well as the coast guard at the press conference scheduled for 11:00. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. we have more coverage. and on our channel 2 website, ktvu.com. also, we'll be streaming this morning's news conference live from san francisco. 7:04. we're following developing news from san jose. the chp is now trying to determine why a van crashed into the lobby of the santa clara valley medical center. this happened early this middle easterning. this is video from the -- early this morning this is video from this morning. there are no reports of serious injuries. it's still not clear what led up to the crash. ktvu's janine de la vega will have more on the many unanswered questions

surrounding this crash in a live report from the scene. that's coming up at 7:30. an iconic restaurant in san francisco will be closed today after an overnight fire. it happened at the forbes island restaurant which is located in between piers 39 and 41 right near the home of the sea lions. that's where we find brian flores to explain why this fire was so difficult to fight. good morning, brian. >> reporter: forming. we're between piers 39 and 41. take a look behind me. you can see that's the forbes island restaurant. you can see the restaurant there heavily damaged from an early-morning fire this morning. it started from the inside, according to firefighters, and just spread out. but the problem is that it is an actual island. crews had to rely on fire boats mainly to put it out. the fire started around 3:00 this morning. still no cause on how it started but fire investigators were here to survey all of the damage. we also understand the owner was here at the time of the

fire. it's unclear this morning whether he was injured or not. but at this point, the restaurant, obviously major damage and obviously won't be opened for some time. >> the restaurant will be closed for good until they find out what happened, and after it's been rebuilt. >> reporter: the restaurant was originally a house boat and a major fixture in sausalito for several years in the '70s but because of regulations it was forced to be moved to antioch and then in 1999 it was towed here and placed on this island where the owner made it into a restaurant. some features include underwater dining rooms. it's also located close to where the sales gather as well -- seals gather as well. there's a couple of people who have taken the boat to the island. we tried to gather comment. but they refused at this point. we'll continue to gather this story and gather more information as the morning

continues. we're here along pier 39 and 41. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. news, the vallejo police are investigating another shooting near a little league baseball field. this happened last night on minnie drive and whitney avenue. police found blood and several bullets on the street. no information on victims or arrests. but the shooting briefly forced the postponement of the game. there was a shooting at this same field in april. we'll learn more about a lawsuit filed against the vallejo police department regarding a deadly officer- involved shooting one year ago. this is video from the shooting june 30th, 2012. the victim's father is seeking damages for excessive force and wrongful death by the department. the lawsuit claims officers fired several shots besides

huey having his hands in the air and yelling "don't shoot." 7:07. new questions this morning about the sudden resignation this week about howard jordan. he says his decision to resign was because of several concerns but ktvu news has learned on wednesday morning, jordan was suddenly called to a meeting at city hall. sources say immediately after the meeting chief jordan sent -- sent out an e-mail that he was resigning. jean quan has launched a nationwide search for a new chief and they will follow the recommendations of an outside consulting team while the search is going on. they've come up with a long list of recommendations to reduce oakland's rising numbers of shootings, robberies and

burglaries. they include immediately improving and expanding the police department's investigative unit, tackling the many unsolved crimes in oakland. the team also says oakland has to do a better job identifying crime hot spots and responding to crime trends. the report also calls for dividing oakland into five separate districts to improve the city's overall crime- fighting efforts. 7:09. we want to check in with sal. see how things are moving on this friday morning at the bay bridge toll plaza. >> it's lighter than we normally see it and that could lead some so say this is friday night. westbound traffic does look good into san francisco with no major problems. 24, 13, 580 have been pretty decent commutes gettinger. but the commute in the east bay getting slower. the westbound 580 is not that good. we have had an earlier crash. it was at north livermore

avenue. it's off shot der. it may be -- shoulder. it may be completely gone. but traffic is still very slow on the altamont pass. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. the local clouds kind of c comi down a little bit. they will burn off sooner today. there's lot of fog out there. we still have a west wind in place. it might be tough today to get warmer weather by the beach. santa cruz, 70s. inland, we'll 'warm to up -- we'll warm it up 4, 8 degrees. the fog coming down kind of enhances the drizzle or mist. i think that will be back tonight into tomorrow morning as well. but fog isn't gonna make much of a push inland. san francisco, last two days, 58. today 61. that's still below average. it looks warmer over the weekend. one system is moving up. you can see the ridge of high pressure. that will give us a warmup over the weekend. we do have the morning clouds

7:14. downloadable instructions on how to make a plastic gun on a 3-d printer have been taken off a website after demands from the u.s. state department. the instructioning could potentially give anyone with access to a 3-d printer the ability to make a plastic gun. more than 100,000 of these were downloaded since they went on there monday before they were ordered removed. a law student runs the from texas runs the website. boston police say they wish the fbi had shared information with them about one of the boston bombing suspects.

at a congressional hearing, boston's police commissioner said he was never told that the fbi had interviewed tamerlan tsarnaev back in 2011. the police department did receive a report five days before the april 125th marathon -- april 25th, marathon -- april 15th marathon. authorities say the warning was routine and not specific. 7:15. president obama is using mother's day to help sell his healthcare reform law. as jacqueline fell reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom, the president is reaching out to women today at the white house. jacqueline? >> reporter: dave, using mother's day as a backdrop, the president hopes to rally the public around popular provisions around the healthcare law. a white house official says the president will ask mothers to encourage their uninsured adult children to enroll in new coverage options that become later this year. his event kicks off a massive effort to promote the overall

health plan. democrats are worried this could hurt them politically in 2015. >> i'm gonna do everything i can to make sure we don't wreck the best healthcare system the world has ever known. >> reporter: reporting live in washington, d.c., factwy lynn fell, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:17. later on today, supporters of a gay boy scout will rally outside san francisco city hall ahead of a major boy scout meeting. last fall, this 18-year-old fulfilled the requirements to become an eagle scout but he was told he would not be getting the award because he's opening gay. today's rally comes a couple of weeks before the boy scouts will vote on an historic resolution that could end the

100-year ban on gay scouts. proposition 65, the landmark law to protect the public from cancer-causing toxins, may get a makeover. critics say the proposition is being used to shake down small businesses. some restaurant owners, even coffee roasters, say they are being threat bed with lawsuit. the accusations -- threatened with lawsuits. the accusations that there could be toxins. they are being side if they don't have one of those prop 65 warning signs displayed. >> this statute was never intended to harm business owners who sell things like coffee and french fries. preservationists are fighting to save the winchester dome theaters in san jose in the wake of the demolition of another dome theater in pleasant hill. these theaters have been in

business for almost half a century. but supporters say development means it's likely the historic theaters will be demolished. the theaters have not officially reached the 50-year mark that's necessary for the consideration. crews demolished the pleasant hill dome earlier this week despite opposition from preservations and the demolition happened hours after the city officials gave the green light. they plan to do an yorerall of the cross wood -- overhaul of the crosswoods shopping center. this was the only theater east of the caldecott tunnel that showed independent movies. whole foods is apologizing after a potentially life- threatening mixup with salads. labeled on a curry chicken salad with eggs were mistakenly reversed with a vegan salad that contains soy. the fda is concerned with those allergies to soy or eggs could

an accident on the sonoma boulevard ramp at interstate 80 in vallejo about 7:30 last night. the chp says the driver narrowly missed an suv and hit a sign before crashing into concrete pillars. the chp says the driver had to be cut out of the car before being taken to the hospital. 7:23. the last original "american idol" judge is voting himself off the show. >> i think the third time is definitely gonna a charm for you. what do you all think? >> randy jackson announced he's leaving "american idol" at the end of the season. he will focus on business ventures. he's been a judge on the show

and interstate 880 in oakland also still looks pretty good as you pass the coliseum. no major problems there. if you are driving in livermore, traffic has been pretty slow this morning. a couple of earlier crashes kind of spoiled the commute which had been going well. as we move to the south bay, slow traffic approaching capital and sunnyvale. 85 and 280 are decent alternates. let's go to steve. >> a lot of low clouds and fog. already some sun for some. some of the fog is coming down. that's reduced visibility. cloudy over san jose. there's plenty of clouds out there. cool, cool, morning. no doubt about it. temperatures have been stuck here. have not moved at all. we'll see some of the inland areas warming up a little bit today. looking for 4 to 8 degrees warmer from away from the coast. there's plenty of gray out there. i don't think that's going over where over -- going anywhere over the weekend.

today is the transition day. there will still be some thick, coast fog. probably stays there. upper 80s are possible inland. you can see the high pressure is sending the next system well to the north. 50s, 60s, coast and bay. 70s inland to a few low 80s. tomorrow is the bigger day. but the lows cool. while it will be warm during the day, i think the nights will be on the chilly side. we top it off on sunday and then a cooling trend, monday/tuesday. a vacaville special ed teacher has been arrested. what police say they found stuffed in the educator's car. >> reporter: we're live in san jose where cleanup crews are still cleaning up the mess and all of the debris after a van came crashing into valley medical center. we'll show you some amazing pictures -- coming up. we're live in napa for a five-day music festival. we'll tell you how this tent city sprang up because of it when "mornings on 2" continues.

the investigation is underway into an early-morning accident at a san jose hospital. a van actually crashed into the lobby of the santa clara valley medical center. janine de la vega joins us live from san jose with some new photos of the crash scene. good morning, janine. >> reporter: hi, tori. yeah, we're about a block away

from where that happened. there's a lot of construction going on here around valley medical center. i just walked to the main entrance. i saw crews are still fixing all of the damage. there's a huge, gaping hole where the window used to be. now, we just got some pictures into our newsroom showing the minivan that crashed into the lobby of valley medical center. authorities say the driver was traveling erratically in the parking lot and then traveled through two posts and then actually plowed into a plate glass window near the front entrance. the driver was immediately taken to the emergency room. we're told he's in stable condition. no word on what caused him to actually travel into the window. his van was then towed away and the chp is now investigating how this all happened. the van traveled so far into the lobby that it hit a wall near the admitting area. >> we called in emergency carpenters to get that window

and the doors fixed. the vehicle actually crashed through a little bit of a wall. the people who were in the admitting area were safe, startled, and scared because i would imagine it made quite a large crash. >> reporter: there was a lot of shattered glass. lots of debris flying everywhere. some of that debris hit a staff member from house keeping, a man, we're told he had minor injuries. some cuts and bruises. he was treated and we're hearing he will be released soon. they opened up a side entrance to valley medical center so that people could avoid stepping on any leftover glass. but the main entrance is also still open. but you could definitely tell with all of the yellow tape and orange cones that something happened here. it's sort of strange to see an open area where there once used to be sort of a wull window. it's no longer there. hospital spokesperson says it's

just a blessing that nobody else got hurt and the van didn't hit anybody. it was just the flying debris that hit people. we will have more information if we get it from the chp because they are investigating this to try to find out what caused this man to do this. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:31. there's been a huge jump in property crime in the bay area in the past few years. crime stats compiled by the bay area news group found there's one burglary or theft every four minutes. those numbers show there was a 17% jump from 2011 to 2012 in the bay area's five biggest counties. in all, there were more than 261,000 property crimes during the past two years. san jose officials say it could be weeks before an arbitrator announces a decision on raises for police officers. police officials say the raises are needed to attract new recruits after a wave of retirements and resignations in

recent years. city officials say the requested raises would cost more than double what has been set aside for pay increases. 7:32. a vacaville school teacher was arrested. he teaches special ed students. the principal got a tip that chambers had drugs in his car. the police say they searched the car and found cocaine, marijuana, and a loaded gun. chambers will be placed on leave as this investigation continues. police in concord want your help this morning. they are trying to catch a peculiarry suspect accused of robbing the t.j. maxx store on clayton road last month. here is a surveillance photo. he was last seen wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, gray bandana, green boxers and black gloves. police say he got away with an undisclosed amount of merchandise. contact police if you have

information. the bottlerock festival is moving in this weekend. thousands are expected to attend. tara moriarty is there talking to people who have set up camp in a nearby park to enjoy the show. >> reporter: good morning. nearly 2,000 people are expected to pack this park this weekend. if you take a look, you can see this is the check-in area, they have porta-potties set up, portable showers. if you take a look around, this is skyline park, about two miles from the festival at the napa fairgrounds. all hotels were booked. so many are pitching a tent instead. we have learned there are people here as far away as london, british columbia and florida. bottlerock kicked off wednesday night. there's 60 acts and it ends sunday with train and jackson browne. >> from indianapolis, indiana and we came out to see the bottlerock music festival.

the lineup was incredible. >> we chose to camp, the background and everything, it's amazing. >> amazing because it's different kind of artists that are performing. i saw every age level, you know, cheering on for, you know, the black crows. i saw little kids and people who could be my grandparents. >> reporter: some neighbors who live near the expo, they've complained that the music is way too loud. others said they love it and they were dancing around to it in their backyard. the event ends at 10:00 each night. 35,000 fans are expected each day this weekend. back here live, this is stateland, but a camp site owner has assumed liability for this festival. he says he's raising money for a good cause. we'll tell you where all of the money is going coming up in our next hour. live from napa, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:35. mountain view police are asking for your help in a fraud case.

the victim was able to provide police a description to create these catches. police say the victim was approached by the spanish- speaking man and woman last month on el camino real in mountain view. the company said they won the lottery and needed help collecting the winnings because they were in the u.s. illegally. they convinced the victim to hand over money and jewelry as a good faith gesture in return for a share of the lottery winnings. 7:36. san jose police released a photo of a suspect wanted in connection with a deadly family disputsearching for 55-year-old louie garza of san jose. he's accused of shooting 46- year-old ralph gomez on wednesday at a home on west boro drive. the two are cousins. family members say they got into an argument just before the shooting. police say bar za has disapeared -- garza has disappeared and may being to the central valley. police are sitching for a

man they say -- searching for a man they say cashed a fake check with a fake california i.d. investigators hope someone will see these photos and recognize the man. the image on the right was taken from a surveillance camera. he walked into the first national bank on mission street about 5:20 on wednesday evening and cashed a check that did not belong to him. he did present a california i.d. with his photo and the victim's personal information. now, take a look at that. if you recognize him, get in contact with daly city police. 7:37. if you live in the south bay you may have felt it. a 3.5 magnitude earthquake hit nine miles east of san jose just after 10:00 last night. on our facebook page, we got a lot of comments from viewers who did feel the quake. one person reported feeling a jolt. another person says her house creaked. the palo alto city council is expected to approve a postal

to buy the historic postal building downtown on hamilton. this is one of many buildings being sold by the post office to cut costs. the city wants to buy the building and then relocate several agencies there taking them out of leased office space. the postal service will put the building on the market next month. no word on how much palo alto's bid will be. for the second time, atlantic aviation is trying to start the construction of an elite facility for private jets at san jose international airport. the company filed a lawsuit yet against the $82 million project. it is seeking a restraining order with allegations that the project violated the airport's safety standards and environmental rules. last month, it tried to appeal the project but that was rejected. all of this comes after san jose awarded the project to a competing company. 7:38. the state of california is

suing j.p. morgan chase over the way it collects debts. the lawsuit claims they did not follow procedures required by california law when they collect funds that are owned by 100,000 credit card holders. the lawsuit accuses the banking giant of robo signing legal documents and failing to inform credit card holders they were being sued. j.p. morgan chase is one of five major banks that settle withed with the state of california and other states after the housing meltdown. b.a.r.t. could be getting ready to get rid of the policy that bans bikes on trains. they are going to take a vote about this. under the current policy bikes are banned during the peak travel hours. a recent pilot project, one that allowed bikes during the peak hours actually picked up support from riders. b.a.r.t. is now considering making a permanent change. b.a.r.t.

is considering expanding the bike storage space as well. 7:39. want to check in again with sal who is keeping a close eye on the toll plaza. the last time we looked it was light. is that still the case? >> it's still light. people want to know what the toll plaza -- especially this time of day, what it is like. it's pretty light. you won't be in this any real slow traffic here. it's unusual for this to be this light right now. we'll take it here. it doesn't look like there's a problem at all. no more -- no problem mere on 237. it's a little bit slow, westbound as you drive over to 101. southbound, 101 at raulston avenue. there is a crash there. and traffic is backed up from highway 92. that's about a mile of slow traffic. if you want to stay clear of that, 280 is a decent alternate. let's go to steve. good morning. happy friday, happy friday. a lot of low clouds, some sun. pretty good fog bank has been coming down, down, down. 5:00, mist and drizzle. temperatures will be warming up away from the coast today. i don't think we'll see too

much change by the coast unless you are down towards santa cruz, capitola. the little system will keep things held in check. away from the coast, i think we'll bump it up. it will be warmer inland and more so over the weekend. today is the tweener day. but temperatures not really a big change by the coast. we'll never see a north or northeast wind. we'll see high pressure building in. cool morning. a lot of 50s. haven't budged all morning lock. had a couple of upper 40s. there was a little chill. the west wind seems to be decreasing. but sfo, oakland, napa, livermore, out to travis. travis had gusts to 26 a couple of hours ago. now i think it's 16. 30s to 60s. some temperatures in the inland areas will be near 90s. redding and then it will be hot in the desert as we rebound from the low. there's a lot of low clouds in place -- place. water temperatures are cold. the gray is not going anywhere.

nasa engineers are trying to fix a serious problem on the international space station. ammonia is leaking from a radiator that cools the power system. there are six crew members on the space station right now, including two u.s. astronauts. the space station commander says the crew is not in danger and right now, there are no plans for an early departure. people in australia were treated to a spectacular site in the sky today that witnessed solar ellipse. that's when the moon blocks the sun and only a ring of light is visibility. the celestial is visible in northern australia for six months. nasa wants to rein in a large space rock. scientists say the $105 million

catamaran flipped over yesterday out on the bay. the san francisco police will be helding up the -- heading up the investigation of what happened. the winds out there were 20 miles an hour. the accident threw all 11 members of the racing team into the waters of the bay. 36-year-old andrew simpson of england, his friends called him bart, was trapped beneath the boat for ten minutes. the former olympic gold medalist could not be saved. >> this tragedy is raising new concerns about the safety of the world-famous yacht case. preliminary competitions begin in july while the main event takes place in september. ktvu's claudine wong is at treasure island with what the head of the racing team just said. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning. yes, there is a lot happening today. we'll have more on the statement in a second. that's happening. we're getting a lot of reaction. a lot of people expressing their condolences. the investigation is also continuing. want to show you what's behind

claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. this is the latest accident during training for the america's cup. last october, a catamaran belonging to team oracle capsized during a practice run at the time, winds were clocked at 30 miles an hour. the tide even dragged pieces of boat, four miles past the golden gate bridge. no one was hurt in the mishap. the refurbished yacht returned to the water in february. in june of 2011, a crew practicing on a 45-foot vessel capsized due to high winds on the bay. the yacht flipped over but the crew was able to quickly right the boat. in that incident, one person suffered a minor injuries. we have more coverage on ktvu and on our website, ktvu.com. we'll stream live this morning's news conference from san francisco. happening now, a manhunt is underway in shasta county for an ex-convict accused of killing his wife and two daughters. deputies are going door to door, searching for 45-year-old shane miller. they think he may still be

hiding in the area after allegedly shooting his wife, sandy miller, and their 4 and 8- year-old fathers at their home tuesday night -- daughters at their home tuesday night. people who live in humboldt county, they were told to shelter in place because miller's truck was found there. miller is an ex-convict who served time on a weapons charges. in the meantime, there's a makeshift memorial at the home where sandy miller and her daughters were killed. officials say there's still no known motive for the killings but deputies confirm they did respond to a domestic dispute at that home last month. 8:04. a restaurant in san francisco is closed today after an overnight fire. it happened at the forbes island restaurant, located between piers 39 and 41.

the driver was under the influence or what caused him to crash into the lobby here at valley medical center. we're still waiting to hear from the california highway patrol on that. we're about a block away because of all of the construction going on. we were able to get a picture of the damage. we just got the pictures of this minivan that crashed into the lobby of valley medical center. authorities say the driver was traveling erratically in the parking lot and for some unknown reasons just plowed into the window near the front entrance. the driver was taken to the emergency room and his van was then towed away and the chp was -- is investigating. the van actually traveled so far into the lobby that it hit a wall near the admitting area. >> the people in admitting were scared. no injuries. thank goodness because of the time of day, and no staff, no patients were anywhere near.

league game. back in april there was another shooting in the parking lot of that very same baseball field. later today, we'll find out more about a lawsuit filed against the vallejo police department for a deadly officer- involved shooting last year. what you are looking at is video from that shooting on june 30th. 17-year-old jarret huey's father is seeking damages for excessive force and wrongful death by the vallejo police department. the lawsuit claims police officers fired several shots despite huey having his hands in the air and yelling don't shoot. the lawsuit links other several other officer-involved shootings by vallejo police between may and october of 2012 where five others were killed. 8:32. this afternoon, the santa clara county sheriff's office will honor those whose lives have been -- who have lost their lives in the line of duty. today's ceremony begins at noon

at the sheriff's office headquarters on first street. during the memorial, younger avenue, between north first street and pedro avenue will be closed. the public is invited to attend. two brothers who drowned in a canoe accident last sunday will be laid to rest tomorrow. nicholas and raymond fell were in a 17-foot canoe with their brother and sister when it capsized in the lexington reservoir. the other two siblings were able to women to shore. they both worked for apple. their funeral is at 10:00 a.m. at the bible church in santa cruz. in napa, people are waking up getting their day started and getting readier to the second full day of the -- ready for the second day of the bottlerock music festival. tara moriarty is there. you've been talking to people who have traveled from all over the wold to come to this event. >> reporter: that's right. the fire department and sheriff's office have been doing patrols.

probably likely those theaters will be demolished. the theaters have not reached the 50-year mark he needed for landmark consideration. crews tore down the 46-year- old pleasant hill dome earlier this week. right there, despite opposition. the demolition happened hours after the city officials gave the green light. the developer plants to replace the theater with a sporting goods store. supporters of the dome say it was the only theater east of the caldecott tunnel that showed independent movies. whole foods now apologizing after a potentially life- threatening mixup with two of its products. whole foods says labels on a carried -- curried chicken salad with eggs were mistakenly reversed with a vegan salad that contained soy. the fda is concerned that consumers with allergies to soy and eggs could suffer an

next year. the 11th circuit, georgia and alabama, held it in savannah, georgia. 167 youngs two years ago ran up $170,000 just for lodging and travel. if you estimate that and a little more for this year, then you have to add in all of the conference costs and a lot more so the tab could be more than just several hundred thousand dollars. officials at first didn't want to talk about -- talk much about it. they took down the links that earned the -- that revsled the conference. the judges said this is needed but it comes at a time when the chief judge said the automatic budget cuts of the sequester were having a negative impact on the judicial branch. >> i'm just curious. why are these conferences necessary and why are they necessary at a luxury resort?

8:55. we are getting new information right now. cnn is reporting that boston marathon bombing suspect tamerlan tsarnaev was buried in a muslim cemetery in doswell, virginia. you will recall there was a lot of problems finding a place to bury tsarnaev in the boston area. many people did not want the man suspected of planting the two bombs that killed three people at the boston marathon last month to be buried in their community. also, there's breaking news coming in from texas. law enforcement officials there just announced they are beginning a criminal investigation into last month's deadly fertilizer plant explosion in west texas. now, at first, they had been calling it primarily an industrial explosion that killed 14 people. now they are saying they are beginning a criminal investigation. this is breaking news as this
